Coding Procedures

The focus group transcript was reviewed for references to prejudices the youth experienced from family members before, during, and after coming out as LGB. Relevant portions were then combined to create a unique dataset. Using a grounded theory approach, open coding procedures were used (Braun & Clarke, 2006; Strauss & Corbin, 1990) to inductively expand our understanding of LGBQ youth’s experiences with prejudice in the family context. Jointly, the authors read through the relevant sections of the transcript that focused on youth’s experiences of familial prejudice to form preliminary categories. During this process, saturation was met when no new preliminary categories were created. The researchers then used the preliminary categories to code the data and further refine and formalize the themes. Any discrepancies during the coding process were discussed, and consensus was met.
